- Zia dimitrena, zia dimitrena,
Cosi’ ci incamminammo verso Stavros.
Noi tutti li a guardare.

English Translation

28th of October 1940. The day that the second world war started
I remember very clearly the day of 28 October 1940. We were picking olives from the threes far enough away from home. I and Voula (the sister) were very young: 12 and 13 years old. There were many women in this land to pick olives and we were there with our grandmother Margarita, whom everyone called Zia (Aunt) Dimitrena.
We heard noises coming from faraway like thunder and the women started saying that it would have started raining soon and that we should hurry up to avoid to get wet. But actually those were not thunders but the bombing in the opposite harbor of Astakos. While we were collecting the olives, we heard the voice of zio Charilaos, a 15 years old boy, calling for our grandmother
- Zia Dimitrena, zia Dimitrena
- Tell me dear
- Zia Dimitrena, the war began and your son Chrisostomos has been recruited for the army.
Grandma continued to hold the ladder. She did not say a word. The other women began to scream and cry 'cause they all had someone who would be leaving for the war. She leaned the ladder next to the tree and ended up collecting the olives. She did not speak. When she finished everything she just said
“we should go”
Why? asked the other woman?
Cause the war began
and she said that with a deep and severe tone.
So we walked till Stavros. In Stavros it looked like there was a public party like the one celebrating the Saint Patron of the village. All the young people from all the villages come in Stavros to sing patriotic song. We should greet our uncle and than I remember that my grandmother wanted to greet him in private.
We were all watching them . Our uncle left for the front and we started to exchange letters: in his first letter he was saying ”girls, that joy and euphoria that you could see and feel in Stavros ended as soon as we entered the boat to leave. We were all sad and when we split one from the others, than ith was really sad and hard”.
