1982年にニューヨークに渡る。世界に武道が通じるか、外国人と友達になれるかを確かめたかった。ニューヨークの道場に集まる外国人たちは、みな大柄で、小柄な自分だったが歓待してくれた。そのとき「自分は日本人ではない。ノーカントリー、国は無い」と伝える。その後、国家意識を持たずに、世界中を回る。
